How to prepare your car for winter
Summer is officially over, and winter is on its way. But is your car ready for the lower temperatures? In this article, we’ll take you through the top things you should consider to prepare your vehicle for winter.
F-O-R-C-E-S
The RAC recommends using the acronym FORCES to remember the simple car checks you should run in the winter months:
Fuel – Cars tend to use more fuel in heavy traffic and start/stop conditions which are more common in poor weather conditions.
Oil – Make sure you check your oil levels using the dip stick and top up if necessary.
Rubber – Ensuring you check your tyre tread depth and air pressure is vital before driving in icy or very wet conditions! While you are doing this, make sure you also check your wiper blades to help maintain good visibility.
Coolant – You should regularly check your engine coolant level and top up if required.
Electrics – Battery problems are the reason for more RAC call outs in winter than anything else! Ensure your lights and indicators are all working and that your battery is checked at your car service.
Screen wash – Using proper anti-freeze screen wash in winter will help prevent a frozen windscreen and keep it free of ice and dirt.
Winter tyres
Many drivers choose to fit winter tyres to their car during the colder months to improve driving safety in certain conditions. They perform best in temperatures below seven degrees Celsius and help prevent slippage in snow or icy conditions – they can also help you avoid getting stuck in the mud!
Basic winter car kit
Putting together a basic car kit ahead of time can ensure you are prepared when the colder weather comes. This can include:
- Ice scraper
- De-icer
- Jump leads
- Blanket
- In-car phone charger
- Reflective warning triangles
Review weather conditions
Before setting out in winter, it is a good idea to check the forecast for any inclement weather that may appear during your journey. If storms, flash flooding or heavy snowfall is predicted, it may be wise to postpone your journey if possible.
Drive safely
Of course, it is always advisable to take care while driving but during winter you should take extra steps to ensure your safety and that of others. This includes using dipped headlights in conditions where visibility is reduced, using the correct gear to avoid slipping and keeping an extended distance to the car in front.
