Motorway driving can be a quick and efficient way to reach your destination, but the high speeds used on these roads mean that they also pose dangers, particularly when not used in the right way.

New and even experienced drivers can often find motorway driving nerve-wracking, but with the right knowledge and driving techniques, these roads might not seem quite as scary. Below we will take a look at just some of the ways you can ensure you are driving safely on motorways.

Watch your speed

First and foremost, ensuring you stick to the speed limit is essential on motorways. Whilst this is typically national speed limit, some motorways may impose restrictions depending on roadworks or traffic conditions, so keep your eye out for any changes and adhere to these limits.

Keep your distance

Ensuring you have enough time to slow down and react to any upcoming driving conditions is vital on all roads, but particularly when driving on the motorway. Some motorways will even provide chevrons on the road to illustrate adequate space between your car and the next.

Keep left

Unless you are overtaking another driver, you should always keep to the left-hand lane of the motorway. Since 2013, hogging the middle lane of a carriageway is considered an offence.

Use your indicators

Whether you need to overtake or are leaving the motorway, using your indicators is critical to ensure that drivers around you are clear of your intentions and have time to react.

Use your mirrors

You should be checking your mirrors regularly to assess the traffic around you; this will let you know if you need to change any aspect of your driving due to forthcoming conditions. In addition to this, looking further down the road will also allow you to adapt your driving based on the road ahead.

Be aware of the weather conditions

The way in which your drive on the motorway will change based upon weather conditions; rainy, wet weather will mean you should allow more distance between yourself and the car in front as stopping distances can be doubled in these circumstances.
